3. Abstain from sexual misconduct
This prohibits all sexual relations outside marriage. Engaging in sexual intercourse at improper times, in improper places, using improper parts of the body, viewing pornographic media, and using devices for sexual gratification all violate this precept.
4. Abstain from false speech
Speak truthfully and never deceive others. Admit what exists, and do not fabricate what does not exist. Deliberate deception constitutes a grave violation of this precept. Try to avoid expedient false speech. Frequent use of such speech harms one’s consciousness, and bad habits easily become ingrained.
5. Abstain from intoxicants
Refrain from alcohol and narcotics. No products containing alcohol may be consumed. Fermented bean curd, for example, usually contains alcohol and must therefore be avoided. Even if vendors claim only a tiny amount is used, any presence of alcohol still counts as an intoxicant. An exception is made only when alcohol is required in medicine to save a life. Many cosmetics also contain alcohol; it is best not to use them.
After respectfully listening to Earth Store Bodhisattva’s teachings, Ayù proceeded to meet the Magistrate.
“Magistrate, Amitabha! Today I wish to inquire about the karmic retribution for incest.”
The Magistrate said: “Incest is conduct that corrupts morality, debases social customs and disrupts the righteous ethical order of human relations. The netherworld will punish such beings severely. Every act of incestuous sexual misconduct committed during mortal life reduces one’s blessings and longevity by two and a half months. After death, such beings fall into the hells for sexual misconduct to endure torment: five hundred years in the Hell of Overturning Wheels, five hundred years in the Hell of Embracing Copper Pillars, five hundred years in the Hell of Iron Bed, five hundred years in the Hell of Rolling Blaze, and five hundred years in the Hell of Blossom Sword Forest. These are standard sentences for ordinary incest offences; the final punishment will be determined according to the full circumstances of each case.”
In an instant, by white lotus flower, I arrived at the Hell of Overturning Wheels. More male souls than female souls were detained here.
